An Adventure Through Skype

Navasota Intermediate School 4th grade science classes took a trip to Antarctica Friday aboard the JOIDES Resolution, a seagoing research vessel that drills core samples and collects measurements from under the ocean floor, giving scientists (and students) a glimpse into the Earth's development. The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) at Texas A&M University, along with the United States Implementing Organization (USIO), is responsible for overseeing the science operations of the JOIDES Resolution. The program offers educational, distance learning opportunities through the Web and live video-conferencing. Intermediate students interacted with scientists and crew members through Skype, the free, online application that allows users to make video calls through the Internet to anywhere in the world.
