Student Engagement

Student engagement refers to the extent to which students actively participate in the learning process; to their willingness, need, desire, and compulsion to participate in, and be successful in, learning activities, thus, promoting higher level thinking for enduring understanding. Engagement occurs when students make a psychological investment in learning, try hard to learn what school offers, and work not simply to earn the formal indicators of success (grades), but to understand the material and incorporate or internalize it in their lives. Students are engaged when they are involved in their work and persist despite challenges and obstacles. Student engagement also refers to a student's willingness, need, desire and compulsion to participate in, and be successful in, the learning process promoting higher level thinking for enduring understanding.
