Developing Literacy and Academic Skills for ELL Students

ELL students are a diverse group of students who know varying levels of English when they enter U.S. schools. It takes many years for students who do not know English when they enter U.S. schools to become fluent and be able to effectively and independently use English in academic settings.

To meet the needs of these students, NISD offers a bilingual education program or an English as a Second Language (ESL) program. The goal of the bilingual program is to develop literacy and academic skills in the student’s primary language and English. The goal of the ESL program is to integrate English-language instruction with academic instruction delivered in English.

Please read the English Language Learners Newsletter for important information related to this program including tips for parents and important dates to remember. There is also a frequently asked questions section. The newsletter and FAQ have been published in English and Spanish. See the Navasota ISD Website for more information regarding Navasota ISD Dyslexia services.
